Attn: English-speaking Tunisians

I feel upset at the thought that, unlike many other nationalities, Tunisian expats are not good at networking. I think it is extremely important that we build a multidisciplinary network of expertise abroad, particularly amongst the English-speaking and anglophile minority. This is the only way of driving the country to rapid progress I believe.

Having been on the blogoshphere for several months now, I am thrilled to know that there are many Tunisians out there who were/are either enrolled in postgraduate programmes in Japanese, American and Canadian Universities or are currently working in top institutions around the world. Why don’t we guys circumvent bureaucracy and set up our own society? Imagine for a second the added value we can bring about to our country without awaiting forms to be approved and faxes to be sent..and translated!

I will let you guys decide on the logistics (website? mailing list? blog?) but I am sure we can do amazing things if we unite and exchange experiences. This is an open invitation, so if you come across this blog and know about anyone who is either 1) affiliated to an English-speaking university/professional body or 2) well connected to the anglophone business world and scientific community, please do advise them of the proposal. It does not matter whether these people are based in Tunisia or abroad.

I am not fond of acronyms, but in order to trigger further enthusiasm I am tempted to call this initiative...ermm.. something along the lines of A.N.T.E.? (Anglophone Network of Tunisian Expertise).

Let’s start hard work shall we?

  • Tarek, FYI, that is the defunct TSS, Tunisian Sientific Society.
    A group of anglo-speaking, mostly made of North Amercan grads. I guess the problem was the lack of support from the French dominicated tunisian administration, and sometime the boycott of the latter of their activities, added to it, the typical power struggle and political agenda of each within such organization.

    I hesitate to agree with your proposal, but if objectives are clear & the guidlines are set, then why not.

  • ok Tarek, the basic idea is good but you need big efforts to make it concrete: Good Luck :-)

    Btw, I think TACC ( tunisian american chamber of commerce) is trying to build such kinda network in business field ( by oraganising seminars, " knock door missions ", luncheons...etc.

    Anyways, I'm no scientific babe, wonder if there is room for me in your project but you can always count on my assistance ;-)

  • Le problelme c'est que la Tunisie ne donne pas la chance aux tunisiens.
    C'est dans la mentalité, un tunisien qui voit un autre tres competent fait tout pour le bloquer...
    Ca se passe a tous les niveaux...alors qu'une personne compétente trouve toutes ses chances a l'etranger.
    Est ce que tu crois qu'avec ton niveau tu seras bien placé dans l'administration tunisienne. Bien sur que non... a moins que tu decides de faire un petit detour par la politique et de porter du mauve!

  • I agree with you Tarek! there is a need to build such a network.
    we should start by creating a mailing list first and a database of profiles.
    Consequently, the members will set their own objectives and share their visions.
    I think that a quorum of identified active members should be present first! then we can may be discuss the creation of an organization.

  • Good initiative! I think we have to create a "selection committe" if we want to insure Quality, Committment , Vision and most important of all sustainability!

    For instance, anyone who wants to join has to send his updated CV and sketch a program [one page max] for the propective "Network" either to Tarek or Napo. Once selected he can then join them in the selection of the next. The thougher the better.

    I think diversity is a must: the network has to comprise all the expertise spectrum: business, engineering, IT, legal, cultural, etc so that it can handle a whole project from scratch.

    Since we're spread apart geographically, a special attention has to be allocated to communication channels and the best web-based project management tools.

    Any docs in French will automatically be ignored.

  • I have just read your last comment and find it to be a good idea, any idea of strenghening the communication between people who see further than their nose is always good.
    The only problem is that I am not sure to have understood the clear and concise objectives of such a network, some extra work should be done on this item.
    Something else is also to set up some minimum criteria to sit on the "founding committee" as if this is left to first come first served we are going to a kind of mess.

    So my proposal in order to start is that someone ( tarek, zizou, myself,anyone......) can centralize the applications (profiles, language proficiency...) and have lets say 5 or 6 committee members begin the drafting of a chart and path the way to the others to join quickly.

  • Thanks for your expressions of interest guys, I think that’s very promising! Let me clarify a few things:

    - This is open to anyyone at any level, provided they speak fluent English. So whether you are a scientist, a medical doctor, a sociologist, a lawyer, or a tenniswoman, you’re more than welcome to join!

    - This is not an elitist organisation. I am against the idea of a selection process whereby I would decide that this person is better than that one. Of course it would be essential to have a bio of everyone, but let’s not get down the path of deciding on people who deserve to be listed as a competence and those who don’t. The aim is precisely to avoid those inefficient bureaucratic processes. So, an advanced university degree and proficiency in English are sufficient to join at this stage.

    The objective from this initiative is, as I see it, three-fold:

    - Allow anglophone Tunisians to interact and promote the (very efficient) anglosaxon modus operandi in our country.

    - Identify Tunisians abroad who have built successful careers and who can benefit the country through their connections with business or academia. For example, we might think of setting up conferences in Tunisian universities, or provide advice to start-up companies or research and development centres back home. We might also think of organising at a later stage business fairs that resemble those held in the English-speaking world, with top companies on the list of participants.

    - Promote the image of Tunisia abroad. Potential investors in a small country like ours never interact with individuals, they want established organisms with people who speak a language they understand

    The website of the “Tunisian Scientific Society” has last been updated in 1999, it says it all. :)

    @Monsieur-Bien, i guess someone who has the same english as you would be ok.

    @Emma, it's that fear of english that's keep you away from progressing...if i was you, i would practise and make mistakes as much as possible so i can learn from them. Note: No one here will be judging you, therefore give it a try.

    @Tarek, the objectives you outlined are already part of a broad presidental plan to mobilize the TN overseas in order to contrbute at different levels to the country. this plan is currently being implemented by the network of TN ambassadors.

    First of all, I don't know if I'm fluent or not in english!!!But I'm using it everyday...

    I'm now involved in an english based doctoral program...So, I'm speaking it at the present time.

    Second, I don't live in an english-speaking country!

    Third, I don't know if I'll have a successfull career :))))Hope so!!!

  • I think what the Egyptians are doing is great Zizou (although I can assure you ours will be called everything but nahdhet Tounes!)

    Ok then, to start with, we need 1) to collect profiles of potential members 2)set up a mailing list, 3) initiate a forum (blog?) to exchange ideas on development projects and 4) identify links with Tunisian businesses, academia and (serious) civil society groups.

  • Hi all. Tarek, I think this is a very interesting initiative. There is a need, however, to have a more broad, and a less pretentious project. I am thinking here of avoiding ideas such as such community is “the only way of driving the country to rapid progess”. I suggest the following:
    1-Since most of the potential members would be educated in Anglophone institutions of higher education (we should agree after all if this is a necessary condition) we should lay out a general ground; a small paragraph: clear, sharp, and not too much jargon.
    2-Such an outline should reflect, in my view, the following points: a) The Maghreb and Tunisia suffer from a uni-linguistic domination that does not reflect necessarily our country’s interests; b) The French language is, as some say, a “cultural booty”, it served us and still but there is no reason to avoid focusing on other languages according to the high interests of our country; c) Building a Tunisian Anglophone community does not mean an attachment to the interests of the anglo-saxon sphere, it is rather a reflection of an attachment to the interests of our beloved country; d) Emphasizing the English language does not mean any disdain of the official language of Tunisia that is the Arabic language, one of the oldest languages in today’s world; e) An Anglophone community encourages linguistic diversity and that is why it would be fond if Tunisians start building similar communities around other languages such as Spanish and Chinese; f) An Anglophone community should promote the use of the English language by all means, that is why all members should commit to use English as their primary language when interacting among each other; g) Promoting the English language should include the publicity of all activities of Tunisian anglophiles including their news, their websites, and their media.

    Obviosuly I am suggesting these points for open discussion.

    3-Let’s begin by very small steps. The project of the “Tunisian Scientific Society” was probably too ambitious. Let’s not be too much institutional. A mailing list with a modest blog is probably the right start.

    So let’s start the blog and collect the emails for the mailing list.

  • Alright, I think I need to make a few more things clear.

    I certainly don’t want this discussion to shift to “English-speaking versus francophone”. I’m not going down this road. The objectives from this initiative are clear, there is no need to bring it down to some sort of civilisational conflict. I am not going to discuss which is better, French or English, I am saying we should get down to business asap. Let us please focus on what we need to do within the framework of this project.

    Tarek (welcome :), studying in an English-speaking institution must not be a necessary requirement. This is not a “society of graduates of the anglosaxon world” (maybe that’s worth a second project?). I believe anyone who speaks fluent English is welcome, regardless of the country of study. Besides, we have no funds and are relying on the Internet, so we need to make the most of it and reach out to as many people as possible. In a word, we need to build a "culture" around this issue. This is what I have in mind.

    If you guys agree, I’m going to set up a generic email address to which everyone can send a bio or a CV. (but please, do not send your life story, one page is largely enough). :)) I will then compile a database. Napo, I rely on your help!

  • tarek, i will TRY to get you an entire domain name + hosting for a full year including 20GB disk, and 1TB of traffic that can host a blog, a forum, unlimited emails, frowarders, auto-responders, you name it. You will have a control panel and you can manage anything you want. and Don't worry abt the fee (i'll take care of it)
    just pick up a name.
    I volunter the acronym. The Tunsian Exchange Group (TXG)..no reference to angloghone, and it's truly about exchanging ideas and opportunities.
    but whatever name you guys agree on is fine by me.
    you can also elect to start with small steps and building an email list and a free blog, then take off later..
    again, it's ur call.
    and BTW, you're nomitated as Chair of this Venture...i think you should lead and take charge at least during the first few months until more people embark and help out...

    But I still think we need to agree on a general common ground: a simple and short paragraph would be enough. It does not have to be done right now; it could be similtanuous with collecting the database.

  • Tarek, this is a good initiative and I am impressed by your attitude and passion for it. After reading your objectives, I can see that only the third one could require a fluent english speaker (promote abroad). The first and the second need interaction with people leaving in Tunisia and thus english could be a handicap, unless members are fluent in both french and english. Anyway my point is that compiling a database of english speaking tunisians experts and connect those in a comunity is a good and noble objective by itself. Once you establish this comunity and start interacting, you can then have an internal discussion about what should or can be done by this specialized comunity to help our country. Thanks for doing this.

    the idea of regrouping tunisian competences is great, however I dunno why they should be fluent in English ? are we going to pass a language exam ???

    Anyway, my aim is that we can understand each other - and my dream is that we use our mother tong ie arabic - but nobody seems interested in maintaining (or reviving) it (ignorance?)

  • I’m very pleased to see that many people are getting enthusiastic about this, I’m sure it’s going to be fun!

    Anis: we all love Arabic!! This is not the issue here, there are certainly many ways of promoting our cultural heritage and this is not one of them. We only aim at grouping anglophone Tunisian experts, because we are all equally tired of the “Tunisia, where is this??” type of reaction we sadly get in the anglosaxon world. We need to make sure our country is visible enough in this part of the world, because, to put it in blunt terms, this is where money and high-quality research are. That’s the way forward.

    Okay then, I’m going to draft a post about the forthcoming steps and TRY (©Napo :p) to manage as much expectations as I can :)

    I agree on the tired of the “Tunisia, where is this??”.
    For many anglophones, seems like a place near Malaysia , Indonesia, somewhere in Asia; and once you told them no it's in North Africa they can't hide their big surprise : " oh, there are white people there ?! " or " why aren't you black then, is one of your parent european ?!"
    And if they handle it, they'll wonder "how come you're an arab counrty ?!"

  • C'est bien de parler anglais, de voir une nouvelle génération affirmée de (blogueurs) tunisiens anglophones, de voir le monde à travers une (la ?) vision anglo-saxonne, de tenter de vous fédérer autour d'une langue et, au-delà, d'une approche culturelle particulière...

    Tout ça est très bien.

    Mais ce qui me fait c... (désolé, je n'ai pas trouvé mieux pour exprimer mon sentiment), c'est cette ARROGANCE qu'expriment certains parmi les anglophones/anglophiles. Arrogance absolue émanant de leur croyance tout aussi absolue de la SUPERIORITE dédaigneuse du modèle culturel et des valeurs anglo-saxonnes, arrogance surajoutée en jouant aux "maîtres du monde" (quelle sottise). Arrogance condescendante, relativement à la France, la francophonie et les francophiles, perçus comme les parias d'une vieille nation vouée aux gémonies, aux valeurs éculées, quasiment "enterrée vivante".

    Messieurs, si vous êtes si confiants dans votre "anglo-saxon way of thinking", pourquoi alors taper si fort sur la francophonie.

    Il y a dans ce déchaînement le signe d'un ersatz de "leadership" mal assumé qui cherche en permanence un souffre douleur - volontairement atrophié pour la circonstance - afin d'exhiber au public sa musculature bourée aux "anabolisants culturels".

  • @emma benji. je n'ai rien dit contre. je maîtrise relativement l'anglais, la plupart des articles scientifiques que je lis sont en anglais, je regarde la BBC :) (une excellente chaîne d'infos au passage), je trouve que le monde anglo-saxon est porteur de valeurs culturelles et civilisationnelles intéressantes. mais je déteste plus que tout au monde cette "démonstration de supériorité" de la part de bcp d'anglo-saxons ou de tunisiens qui, parce qu'ils font leurs études ou travaillent en Amérique du Nord ou en Grande-Bretagne se croient avoir découvert "la civilisation ultime" et nous assènent avec une implacable certitude que la France est "finie", que les français sont "nuls, qu'ils "n'ont toujours pas compris comment fonctionne le monde, qu'"ils ne font que râler" et, insulte suprême, qu'"ils n'arrêtent pas de réflechir alors qu'il faut agir".

    Il est vrai que certains américains, eux, ne réflechissent pas du tout. tant qu'à faire, puisque ça rend les choses si simples (simplistes, dirons d'autres).

    - il y a le "dit" et le "non-dit". je ne fais pas de toi le représentant en chef de l'anti-francophilie mais il suffit parfois de lire entre les lignes pour percevoir l'objet de mes commentaires

    - je n'essaye pas provoquer un débat, ni de te provoquer (ça n'a aucun intérêt pour moi). j'ai simplement dit ce que je pensais, that's it. je pouvais tout autant parler de finale de la coupe du monde de football ou de la reproduction des iguanes des Galapagos.

  • Juste une remarque déjà faite par certains: faut savoir que certaines personnes très compétentes auront sûrement envie de faire partie de ce projet mais le problème c'est qu'ils parlent pas anglais du tout ou bien juste un peu. Donc ça me parait discriminatoire cette obligation de parler anglais même si cette obligation découle del'idée même du projet.
    Maintenant, en ce qui me concerne je suis partant.
