Capital punishment
2006 has been a very bad year for ruthless dictators: Pinochet, Niyazov and now Saddam have all passed away; with the only exception that Saddam's passing was deliberate.I strongly believe the death penalty is, in itself, a criminal and barbaric act that must be abolished in modern democratic nations. Does killing wipe out wrongdoing? does it deter people from committing murder? and most importantly, does it compensate the victims?
I have no idea why capital punishment still exists in our Laws. Even though it is rarely enacted its very existence on paper is appalling enough. If you have a free society of educated and informed individuals, a society that works well under the rule of Law, you shouldn't feel the urge to discipline people with practices from the middle ages. There are more effective yet humane ways of enforcing justice in a 21st Century society.
Oh well, let's hope 2007 will be more cheerful for human rights than 2006.

J'ajouterai que la peine de mort institutionnalise une culture de la violence et exacerbe le sentiment de vengeance entre les humains.
En définitive non seulement la peine de mort ne résout pas les problèmes de fond d'une société, en plus elle n'est même pas efficace car dans les pays où elle est pratiquée la criminalité n'a pas baissé, parfois même elle augmente.

la peine de mort est la plus penible des executions que dire chez quelqu'un qui a bombardé tel aviv et qui a affronté Bush n'est ce pas.
